Matching up the old and new number plates to years and place of registration has always been a bit of a puzzle for me, so when I received a leaflet from the DVLV about the new number plates it started me thinking about an article I had seen in one of The Bug Club magazines (Buggin), about the old office locations. After a few attempts to contact the DVLA and various other sources to confirm details, I eventually managed to piece together what I now believe to be correct:

TRADITIONAL NUMBER PLATES

  • Vehicles constructed before 1.1.73 may display traditional style "black and white" plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.
  • Lettering must be of a set size. It must conform to one of the two groups below.

  • Traditional number plates fitted to vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973 are not required to display the mandatory character font, but the characters must be easy to rea
